About Leptospermum

Leptospermum are aromatic evergreen, shrubs or small trees that are commonly known as ‘manuka’ or ‘tea trees’, native to Australia. Silky, saucer-shaped blooms have spiky stamens and sit upon dense bushy foliage of narrow slender leaves and rigid, woody branches. Leptospermum look perfect when positioned against wall side borders within a gravel garden. You should expect to see Leptospermum grow to an approximate height and spread of 3m (10’).

How to plant Leptospermum

Leptospermum are best planted in well-drained soil of chalk, sand and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They prefer a position of full sun but will also tolerate part shade if necessary. It is recommended that you amend your soil with a generous layer of mulch if the soil is heavy or clay based. Spread the mulch around your shrub taking care not to touch the base or foliage. Water thoroughly and deeply.

How to care for Leptospermum

Leptospermum should be watered weekly and thoroughly whilst they are still young. As they mature, the watering schedule can be reduced. In wet weather, additional watering is not required as these shrubs need well-draining soil that does not retain high volumes of moisture. You may wish to feed Leptospermum with a balanced fertiliser in early spring and water thoroughly. Prune young shrubs to establish a single trunk and remove side shoots from the base. Prune off the tips to create a bushier and more floriferous growth.

How to propagate Leptospermum

It is possible to propagate Leptospermum by semi-hardwood cuttings.
