Hayloft was born from Yvonne’s kitchen table within her home ‘The Hayloft’, a converted barn set within the village of Wick near Pershore, Worcestershire soon after the birth of her daughter Charlotte in 1992. Yvonne sought a project that would keep her busy at home whilst being able to spend time with her daughter. Yvonne’s son Alexander arrived in 1994 where Hayloft continued to grow from strength to strength, surpassing all expectations. It did not take long for Yvonne to require additional assistance with the increased volumes of order processing and plant packing.
Harriet joined Hayloft in 1994, bringing her two daughters Hannah and Heather along for the ride too. They were of a similar age to Charlotte and Alexander and kept each other occupied for hours on end. For some time, Harriet took charge of the office activities whilst Yvonne packed plants in the nearby market town of Evesham.
In 2002, after incredibly buoyant sales of Edward Wilson’s Pensham Penstemon, Yvonne and Harriet were able to buy a nursery and offices at Manor Farm in Pensham, between the historic town of Pershore and the renowned RHS Pershore Horticultural college. Yvonne and Harriet were in awe with the enormity of space they had acquired. In reality, the office was rather small although in comparison to a kitchen table was quite mammoth!
Sixteen years since the relocation to Manor Farm and Hayloft have acquired two further nurseries; Sandylands within the hamlet of Pensham and Hollyoak Nursery in Little Comberton just down the road. Hollyoak Nursery was built by the previous owners to grow indoor orchids. The greenhouses are of a high specification and the nursery is large enough to accommodate Yvonne’s plan to offer an extensive range of plants in various sizes to suit all gardeners.
Sandylands nursery keep hardy potted plants dry and free from frost over the winter months whilst Manor Farm keeps all the young plants so that they arrive with you in tip top condition. We also have a state of the art cold store on site that enables dormant plants, such as bare roots to be held over the winter without any loss of viability.
Plants are grown on in peat-reduced compost. This is in line with Defra’s stated aim of eliminating peat in horticulture by 2030. The packaging we use to deliver your plants are made up of re-cycled material to reduce the impact we have on the environment throughout the logistics and operations processes. We are continuously on the look out for new innovations to keep mother natures realm a place of natural beauty.
Unfortunately, due to our office location at Manor Farm, we do not have permission to invite customers to our nursery. However, if you are in the local area and you wish to collect your plants from our office, you are more than welcome to do so. Once an order has been placed with instruction to collect, we will contact you when your plants are ready. This enables you to pick up your plants seven days a week from our main office, saving any postage charges.
Hayloft Plants Greenhouse for Plant Packing
In early 2020, The European Union kindly awarded Hayloft a large grant to build a plant packing greenhouse on the Hollyoak Nursery. This made the plant packing operation much more efficient, stopping large lorries going into the village of Pensham and saving many tonnes of carbon being emitted into the atmosphere every year. Thank you.
