Gerbera Garvinea are a hardy series of Gerbera that have been bred from several species around the world. These perennial plants are produced in an abundance of colourful shades where blooms closely resemble the shape of a daisy. As most varieties are tender, hardy Gerbera have created a new appeal with ample glossy foliage and tall majestic stems. They are best suited to containers or flower beds and borders within cottage and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Gerbera Garvinea grow to an approximate height of 45cm (18”) and a spread of 40cm (16”).
Gerbera Garvinea are best planted in well-drained soil. Amend the planting area with grit and organic matter consisting of leaf mould or well-rotted manure as this will improve the overall drainage and quality of the soil. Gerbera are deep rooting so ensure that they are placed in a deep bed. If planting in containers, use potting compost with a little extra grit and water well. Position in a sheltered area of full sun where they will thrive best.
During the summer, water Gerbera freely and thoroughly especially during periods of drought. Apply a general purpose fertiliser such as a tomato feed – this should be undertaken on a fortnightly basis. During the winter, reduce the amount of water you provide, keeping the soil relatively dry. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage a deluge of further flowering. There is no pruning required other than to remove damaged, dead or old foliage.
