Phlomis are herbaceous perennial or evergreen shrubs with small, dark green leaves and tubular flower heads that stack neatly against stately, thin stems. They can otherwise be referred to as ‘Jerusalem Sage’ and are native to both Europe and Asia. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within informal, mediterranean and coastal garden settings. You should expect to see Phlomis grow to an approximate height of 120cm (48”) and a spread of 90cm (36”).
Phlomis are best planted in well-drained soil of sand, loam and chalk within an acidic, alkaline and neutral PH balance. They require plenty of space to grow so take care when choosing an appropriate site. It is recommended that Phlomis are positioned in an area of full sun although they will tolerate part shade if necessary.
Phlomis are easy to maintain, and are the perfect shrub for those with limited time. They require watering in sustained periods of dry weather and moderately throughout the year otherwise. The seed heads of this plant will create winter interest, alongside providing a vital food source to birds and wildlife. During spring, it is recommended that you cut back frost damaged stems to the level of a healthy bud, pruning generally on an annual basis to encourage future growth. Hardy varieties will need protection from harsh winter weather.
