Hardenbergia are climbing evergreen perennials also known as the ‘Lilac Vine’, closely resembling a miniature flowering Wisteria. Gorgeous elongated and ovate foliage adorn thin wiry stems alongside small, pea-like flowers throughout spring and summer. Hardenbergia are best suited to flower beds, borders and containers within a cottage or informal garden setting. However, it is recommended that they are best grown in pots where they can be easily transplanted during cold conditions. You should expect to see Hardenbergia grow to an approximate height of between 2-4m (6.5-13’) and a spread of 50cm (20”).
Hardenbergia are best planted in well-drained soil of loam and sand within a neutral or acidic PH balance. Hardenbergia are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade. If planting outside, amend the native soil with organic matter to improve drainage. If planting Hardenbergia in containers, grow in a loam-based potting compost with a generous amount of sharp sand and leaf mould. After planting, water thoroughly and deeply to settle the soil.
Water Hardenbergia throughout active growth when the soil becomes dry to the touch and throughout periods of drought. Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly to encourage better flowering and foliage performance. Keep just moist in winter and provide support when necessary. Hardenbergia do not like to be transplanted once in situ although pots and containers should be moved to a suitable environment when frosts and cold weather arise.
