Allium

History and Origin:

Allium is part of the sub-family Allioideae within the main family, Amaryllidaceae. The name ‘Allium’ is the Latin word for garlic and is more commonly referred to as an ornamental Onion. They are native to Asia although some varieties have been found in Africa, Chile and Brazil. Allium were first described in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist and physician.

About:

Alliums are bulbous perennial plants with erect leafless stems, often curved flower heads and strap-shaped leaves. They’re great for adding late spring and summer colour, providing attention to borders and containers.
