Alliums produce spectacular displays and are incredibly popular for RHS show gardens early in the season. Not only do they provide attractive, spherical flowerheads, they also bring in multitudes of pollinators to feast on their nectar. Allium nigrum is a more unusual and exciting, white flowering variety which is shorter in stature than many - making it ideal for containers, the front of a border or a more exposed site such as a gravel garden. Nonetheless, Allium nigrum has strong, graceful stems up to 65cm tall, which hold the floriferous spheres above strap like foliage and surrounding plants. With strategic planning, blooms can create the illusion that they hover above mounds of other flowers or foliage below for a magical effect. Also perfect as a cut flower, either fresh or dried, where they will last for up to 2 weeks as fresh blooms.Plant these hardy, bulbous perennials in autumn for flowers the following June, and many summers beyond. Prefer a site in full sun with well-drained soil.
