Tell Me More...
Low-growing Allium karataviense Ivory Queen is also known as Kara Tau garlic. Orange-sized spheres formed from small white flowers top a leafless stem with green-grey broad leaf foliage below. The blooms offer a slight garlic scent which attracts low-flying pollinators. Ivory Queen would be best grown at the front of a mixed border or as part of an attractive container display. Alliums are not fussy about soil type but they prefer well-drained and in a sunny spot. It is preferable to protect them from strong winds. Alliums are perfect as cut flowers and are able to last around 2 weeks in a vase or floral bouquet. The seedheads can be dried as ornaments once they have finished flowering. Ivory Queen is usually planted in September-October and flowers in May-June. Ornamental onions settle well in the garden and large clumps may have to be divided once the flowering season is over.
