Allium Cristophii is a mid-sized ornamental onion, ideal for the middle of a border or planted in mixed containers. Its large spheres consist of around 100 small, star-shaped lilac flowers which wave majestically on tall stems above blue-green strap-like foliage. Flowers have a metallic sheen and are about 20cm in width. This award-winning bloom is a Chelsea Flower Show favourite which many designers encourage open just a little earlier in order to include their impressive presence. Natural flowering time is June and July. What is more, when flowers fade the architectural seedheads are well worth leaving in situ for as long as the stems remain upright. Allium Cristophii makes a great addition to a bouquet - both as a freshly cut flower and a dried seed head - include it in mixed arrangements or as a single variety display. Fresh blooms will last up to 2 weeks in a vase. Bulbs should be planted in early autumn and prefer a site in full sun which benefits from well-drained soil, preferably with some shelter from strong winds. As a hardy perennial they do not require any winter protection and, in the right conditions, will readily naturalise.
