Tell Me More...
Allium sphaerocephalon is also known as the round-headed garlic or Drumstick allium due to its unusual shape. This medium-height ornamental onion has blooms that blossom green and gradually mature to an attractive maroon purple. The blooms are made up of a cluster of small bell-shaped flowers and the shape of the bloom is more egg-shaped than spherical. These dazzling alliums have been used in RHS Hampton Court show gardens. They prefer well-drained sheltered spots in full sun. Allium sphaerocephalon is a perfect addition to the centre of a herbaceous border or as a clump of plants in a container. This allium makes a great cut flower for arrangements or vases as they can last up to 2 weeks. These hardy perennials will bloom year after year. If they outgrow their allotted plot they can be divided after flowering in the autumn. Plant in the autumn September-October for flowers in July-August.
