Currently the largest allium available, Allium giganteum is a tall ornamental onion which creates an impressive focal point in any garden, with blooms up to 15cm or more across. These spherical balls are made up of small star-shaped flowers in shades of pinkish purple. Growing up to 1.8m tall, this ornamental onion is perfect for the rear or middle of a border where the flowerheads create architectural interest. Allium giganteum, like most, is drought tolerant and can be a useful plant for a gravel garden or tricky sloping site, providing it is shielded from strong winds.Plant in well-drained soil which benefits from full sun for flowers in June and July.
