Pink lily leek or Allium oreophilum is also known as Mountain Lover and, as the name suggests, adapts well to a rockery, border or container. Originally from Turkistan, from May to July this shorter allium produces up to 20 starry cerise pink flowers with a pink or yellow centre and deep pink veins. These individual blooms merge together to form a striking spherical flowerhead. Bushy in habit with narrow leaves and a height of around 20cm, with an individual spread of around 10cm, Allium oreophilum is a bright, dependable alpine centrepiece which is also great for cutting, lasting around 2 weeks in a vase or posy. Ornamental onions are a perfect way to attract pollinators and grow well in most well-drained soils. Position in full sun, with shelter from strong winds. Like most Allium, oreophilum is hardy (H6) and will naturalise, creating drifts of colour. Clumps can be split after flowering, once established.
