Agapanthus is the single genus in the sub-group Agapanthoideaea of the family Amaryllidaceae. The genus was first established by L’Heritier in 1788 and was initially part of the Lily and onion family before being placed under the Amaryllidaceae family. The word originates from the Greek term ‘agape’, meaning love and ‘anthos’ meaning flower. Agapanthus are native to South Africa and cannot be found growing in the wild anywhere else in the world.
Agapanthus are clump-forming perennials with lush strap-shaped foliage, majestic stems and clusters of impressive trumpet-shaped flowers. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard, cottage and informal garden settings and will also make an impressive display within a vase or as part of a bouquet.
