Agapanthus hybrida 'Vallee de l'Authion' is a new evergreen variety of agapanthus which has arrived from France and has a definite air of the Mediterranean about it. The outer petals of each trumpet-shaped bloom are lavender-blue and the interior is pale blue with a violet stripe - reminiscent of the deep blues of the Mediterranean sea. The flowers are carried on tall steams and multiples are held aloft in umbels that make them appear delicate, even though they are quite strong and weather resistant. Agapanthus hybrida 'Vallee de l'Authion', as an evergreen variety, is more tender that its deciduous cousins and will need protection from winter frosts. Agapanthus are, however, ideal for growing in containers as they like their tough roots restricted and will flower better as a consequence. Plant in a gritty, loam based growing medium, water and feed weekly, and you will be rewarded with stunning globe-like umbels of flowers 70-90cm tall in summer.
