Large, almost spherical flowerheads, created by many velvety, trumpet-shaped blooms, are held on tall, strong stems from July to September. Also known commonly as African Lilies, the striking blooms make superb cut flower displays to enjoy in your home, lasting up to two weeks in a vase. Eye-catching when planted in groups, particularly when grown in containers as a feature on your patio or balcony. The blooms sit upon strappy foliage all summer and are happy in coastal areas with salty sea breezes. Given the Award of Garden Merit by the RHS, Agapanthus Royal Velvet is a deciduous perennial with an RHS hardiness rating of H4 meaning it will only need protection if temperatures drop below -10 C. Reaching a mature height and spread of around 1m, like most Agapanthus, it is drought tolerant, preferring to be grown in a sunny spot, in well-drained soil.
