A newer, evergreen variety of agapanthus with strong, straplike leaves which remain fresh looking all year round. From July to September Agapanthus hybrida ‘Vallée de la Loire’ produces tall, robust stemmed blooms in rich and alluring shades of blue and purple. Each trumpet shaped flower has stripes to its interior and the exterior is decorated with a similar, striated pattern for some extra pizazz. Blooms are held in multiples for a generous, airy, almost spherical impact in containers, borders and vases. Originally native to Africa, these clump-forming perennials love a spot in full sun with any aspect other than north facing. Plant in any soil other than clay based and ensure plants have a moist, well-drained growing medium for best results. Once established these beauties are drought tolerant too. Agapanthus hybrida ‘Vallée de la Loire’, like other agapanthus, prefers a restricted space and is ideal for growing in pots on a sunny patio or balcony. A hardy (H4) perennial which tolerates temperatures down to around -10°C, so should not need additional winter protection except in the very coldest parts of the UK.
