Tell Me More...
When it comes to vibrant, spring colour, few plants can better the candelabra primula, not least the dainty and compact Primula bulleyana. From April to June, stout stems emerge from rosettes of semi-evergreen, crinkled leaves, bearing tiered whorls of glowing apricot-orange flowers. This species is happiest in a moist, partially shaded spot, where its warm blooms almost glow in the dim light of their surroundings. Candelabra primulas are most effective when grown in generous drifts, which can be achieved by allowing plants to set seed and naturalise. Alternatively, dot through the front of a mixed, herbaceous border, with other spring-flowering plants. Primula bulleyana prefers deep, humus-rich, moist soil with a neutral to acid pH value. Plants prefer partial shade although will adapt to full sun if the soil remains moist. A hardy semi-evergreen perennial which matures to a height and spread of 60cm.
