Sweet peas were originally brought to England by Father Cupani in 1699 from Sicily. From these original specimens developed the ‘grandiflora’ varieties, which are usually known as the ‘Old Fashioned Sweet Peas.’ Lathyrus odoratus ‘Old Fashioned Mix’ brings more intense, richer colours to your trellis and fencing with a wonderfully strong and heady scent. We recommend planting near a seating area where you can appreciate the perfume while you relax. Flowers are dainty - smaller than more modern sweet pea breeding, however they grow in profusion from June until first frosts. Perfect for picking every day and even a small vase full can fill a room with a delicious aroma. Even better, the more blooms you pick the more are produced, just don’t let them go to seed! Bee, butterfly, and pollinator heaven. Lathyrus odoratus ‘Old Fashioned Mix’ prefer well-drained soil which is loam or sand based. Plant in a sunny position and these climbing plants will reach a height of 1.8m with a spread of 50cm. Hardy annuals from which seed can be collected for the following year.
