Creating a dramatic display, a myriad of bell-shaped blooms are held on strong, wiry stems from May to October, and very often longer. Attractive, glossy, green, semi-evergreen foliage forms beneath. The open-mouthed bells invite pollinators to visit, while slugs, rabbit and deer tend to leave well alone. Collection comprises; 'Pensham Eleanor Young' - deep, rich, blackcurrant-coloured blooms, each one with a darker throat, height 75-100cm, spread 45-60cm; 'Pensham Laura' - unusually large, white, foxglove-like blooms with pretty, picotee-like, bright, fuchsia-pink edges, height 70-90cm, spread 45-60cm; and 'Alice Hindley' - slender blooms in faint lilac shades are tinged and mottled pink, height 75-100cm, spread 45-60cm. Easy to care for, penstemon prefer to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in sun or part shade. The RHS have awarded a hardiness rating of H4, so if weather stays above -10 C, protection will not be required.
