Tell Me More...
You will have colour for over 6 months of the year, as Penstemon 'Raven' boasts a profusion of dark purple, bell-shaped blooms held on many strong, wiry stems above mid green, semi-evergreen foliage from May to October, often longer. And you won't need to battle against slugs and snails either, as Penstemon are not eaten by any garden pests but are love by bees.A member of the 'Bird Series' of Penstemon, introduced in the 1960's, which also includes 'Osprey', 'Flamingo' 'Whitethroat' and 'Blackbird'.Penstemon 'Raven' has been given the RHS Award of Garden Merit for outstanding performance in the garden. Best planted in moist, well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded spot, in borders or containers. Thirsty nectar-loving insects will visit for a treat while slugs, rabbits, deer and other garden pests tend to steer clear of the glossy, semi-evergreen foliage.Penstemon 'Osprey' grows to a mature height of around 1m and will spread to between 45-60cm. Given an RHS hardiness rating of H3, some protection over winter may be needed if temperatures go below -5 C.
