The award-winning Digitalis ‘Elsie Kelsey’ has been heralded as one of the most exciting new foxgloves in recent years, and it is easy to see why. From early to mid-summer in it sends up large spires of white flowers with contrasting, maroon-blotched throats. The results are striking and perfect for adding bold, vertical accents towards the back of a border. We love seeing its markings chime with the matching tones of Sambucus nigra, surrounded with other cottage garden favourites such as persicaria, hesperis, anthriscus and aquilegia. As a biennial, Digitalis ‘Elsie Kelsey’ produces a rosette of leaves in its first year (which remain over winter), and flowers in its second year. Allowing it to self-seed by leaving seedheads on the plant should ensure an ongoing presence in the garden, though if there are other digitalis growing nearby the new plants are unlikely to be identical to ‘Elsie Kelsey’. For best results grow in humus-rich, moist, well-draining soil in light dappled shade. While beautiful ‘Elsie Kelsey’ is also tough, able to withstand an exposed spot and hardy to between -15° and -20°C. H: 1.2m S: 45cm.
