Tell Me More...
A wonderful shade lover. Astrantia major Shaggy is much loved by florists as an invaluable addition to arrangements both when freshly cut or when dried. Perfect for pollinators too, bees and butterflies just adore Astrantia. Often referred to as Hatties Pincushion, explained when you look at the blooms and see the centre looking like pins stuck into a cushion, although we are never sure who Hattie was. The pincushions of tiny, clear white flowers are surrounded by larger ruff-like bracts and held on upright, branching stems, creating sprays of large, intriguing, star-like blooms from May to September and often longer. Astrantia Shaggy is the perfect plant for moist, shady beds, borders, or containers where you wont be able to resist touching the papery petals to check they are real. A huge bonus is that they are slug resistant, so the pests should leave them alone. Astrantia major Shaggy prefers to be in moist, well-drained soil in part shade. Reaching a height of approximately 70cm and spread 40cm Astrantia are fully hardy perennials which can be left outside all year round to be enjoyed for years to come
