Tell Me More...
Primula vulgaris is a tangy, sweetly scented cottage garden favourite which grows wild in hedgerows, verges and open ground throughout the UK. As a native wildflower, these plants offer you a fantastic opportunity to create a woodland or wildlife habitat within your own boundaries. Primula vulgaris will also thrive in rockeries, baskets and containers - allowing you to add rural charm no matter how large or small your garden is. This clump forming, pollinator friendly native will naturalise in your garden too - bringing pale yellow flowers throughout March to May each year, with foliage lasting from April through to September time. Keep an eye out for special Brimstone butterflies who are drawn this plant's nectar when the emerge in spring. Plant with narcissus and bluebells for a dreamy woodland impact or with dwarf iris and muscari for a more orchestrated effect. In Ireland, primroses are symbolic of eternal love and, if festooned around a doorway, are said to prevent faeries from entering the house.Primula vulgaris prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial shade. A fully hardy herbaceous perennial which reaches a height of 30cm with a spread of 20cm.
