Echinacea

History and Origin:

Echinacea is a genus that was formerly part of the Compositae family and is now placed within the Asteraceae family. They have a variety of common names such as Coneflower, Black Sampson, Indian Head and Black Susan’s, among many others. Echinacea are native to North America although is widely cultivated in Europe and the remainder of the US. Conrad Moench, an 18th century botanist gave Echinacea its name from the Greek word ‘echinos’, meaning hedgehog which refers to the spiky seed heads.

About:

Echinacea are perennial plants with large, daisy-like flower heads that display a lively show of colour and a dark protruding central cone that is both distinctive and spikey. Clump-forming foliage will showcase leaves covered in coarse hair to create a textured and bushy effect. Echinacea tend to be highly fragrant and will attract an abundance of bees and butterflies.
