Dianthus is a genus of approximately 300 species in the Caryophyllaceae family and were first made evident during the Roman and Greek period through artwork and records. The name ‘Dianthus’ is from the Greek words meaning ‘Zeus’ and ‘flower’ and was cited by the Greek botanist Theophrastus. Dianthus are native to Europe and Asia although some species have been found in south and north Africa. Christians believed that the first Dianthus to have bloomed on earth was when Mary wept for Jesus as he carried the cross.
Dianthus are perennials or annuals with colourful blousy blooms and thick, woody stems. They are a classic and popular choice for many within a variety of garden styles. Dianthus are often referred to as ‘Carnations’ or ‘Pinks’. Some varieties will even make wonderful cut flowers and container plants.
