For drier conditions we love Dianthus 'Diane'. This spreading evergreen has attractive grey-green foliage and, from June to September, produces masses of double, rich rosy-pink flowers (continuously if watered regularly). Each measure around 6cm across and exude a strong scent of cloves. Dianthus 'Diane' is an excellent plant to choose for a sunny slope, an exposed, stony border, or if you are simply looking for something you can plant and leave to its own devices. It is equally at home in a bustling cottage garden, or as a softening 'filler' in a more pared back, formal environment such as a rose garden. For best results grow in full sun in well-draining, neutral to alkaline soil. Dianthus can be relatively short-lived as they become woody over time. It is not unusual to have to replace them every six years or so, though thankfully they are very easy to propagate from cuttings. Aim to do this after two to three years, to have good-sized replacements ready when the time comes. Dianthus 'Diane' is very hardy, able to tolerate temperatures between -15 C and -20 C.
