For drier conditions we love Dianthus 'Laced Monarch'. This spreading evergreen has attractive grey-green foliage and, throughout June to September produces (continuously if watered regularly) masses of double, pink flowers with deep red markings. These are held on tall, strong stems, emit a strong, clove scent, and have an extremely long vase life as cut flowers. As a strong, low-growing evergreen, Dianthus 'Laced Monarch' makes an ideal plant for the front of a border or lining a path edge. Its rich, pink colouring goes particularly well with purples such as allium, nepeta, and salvia, with a sharply contrasting acid-green such as alchemilla to complete the picture. Add a later flowering plant such as sedum and you have a stylish, successional combination. For best results grow Dianthus 'Laced Monarch' in full sun in well-draining, neutral to alkaline soil. Dianthus can be relatively short-lived, and it is not unusual to have to replace them every six years or so. Thankfully they are very easy to propagate from cuttings; aim to do this after two to three years, to have good-sized replacements ready to go. 'Laced Monarch' is very hardy, able to tolerate temperatures between -15 C and -20 C. H: 40cm S: 40cm.
