Dahlia is a genus within the Asteraceae family, native to Mexico. It is recorded that Dahlia were discovered by the Spanish in Mexico during 1525. They were not introduced or grown in Europe until 1789. It is said that Dahlia are named in honour of Andreas Dahl and Swedish scientist and environmentalist during the 18th century.
Dahlia are tuberous rooted perennials, produced in a variety of shapes, sizes and colour. They showcase pinnate leaves and impressive flower-heads, double in some cultivars. They are best planted in flower beds and borders whilst making an attractive centrepiece as cut flowers in a vase or bouquet.
