Many of the pretty, berry laden hollies you see in gardens throughout the British Isles and beyond will have a handsome male counterpart nearby which enables them to look their very best over winter into spring each year. This is because cross-pollination needs to occur in order to dress your Christmas table, deck the halls or merely provide a feast for the native wildlife. We love Ilex x merserveae ‘Blue Prince’ for this task as not only does he mature over 10-20 years reaching a maximum height of 4 metres, with a spread of 2.5 metres he offers dark, purple-green stems and intriguing blue-green foliage too. In April to May small white flowers are borne, attracting pollinating insects which visit and then, in turn, fertilise the female blooms nearby. In this way, although Ilex x merserveae ‘Blue Prince’ does not produce red berries itself, it plays a vital role in providing them for your garden. Plant in moist, well-drained soil of any kind. This fully hardy shrub, or tree, is happy in any aspect as long as it has either full sun or partial shade. Can be grown as hedging as well as a stand-alone, specimen shrub. Prune in late winter or early spring, trim hedges in early spring.
