Chimonanthus praecox is also known as Wintersweet, just the perfect name as it springs into life during the darkest months. A joy to behold. Highly prized by floral artists for the beautiful spicy scent, even a single stem makes an eye catching fragrant indoor display. The creamy, sulphur yellow, veined, almost waxy petalled flowers with dark maroon centres appear pendulously on bare stems omitting a sweet, spicy scent from November to March. Grow against a warm wall or in a sheltered border where the foliage will form a rounded dome. Perfect for near a window or doorway so you can catch the fantastic fragrance. Originating in China, Chimonanthus praecox has been used in Chinese folk medicine for centuries. Chimonanthus praecox prefers to be grown in full sun in well-drained soil. Relatively slow growing, reaching a mature height of 3m, and spreading to around 2m, it is a fully hardy perennial.
