With robust, skeletal branches and narrow, dark, evergreen leaves, ‘Red Star’ provides valuable structure to your planting. From May to June pretty white flowers are produced in profusion – much to the delight of pollinators, particularly bees. Spherical, bright scarlet berries follow in autumn and winter, providing shelter and sustenance to birds and other small mammals. It is also worth noting that Pyracantha coccinea ‘Red Star’ has less thorns than many other cultivars. Known commonly as ‘Firethorn’, because of the vibrancy and profusion of the berries, pyracantha can be grown as a free-standing shrub which, when planted ‘en masse’, forms a wonderfully protective hedge. Alternatively, your plants can be trained against a wall or fence within cottage or informal garden settings to offer colourful and beneficial screening. Pyracantha coccinea ‘Red Star’ will reach a mature height and spread of around 4 metres and responds well to pruning. A hardy (H6), evergreen shrub which does not need additional winter protection throughout the UK. Prefers fertile, moist and well-drained soil which is not acidic in pH. Position in sun or partial shade with any aspect other than north facing.
