Peony or Paeony is in the genus Paeonia, the only genus in the family Paeoniaceae. They are native to Asia, Europe and Western North America. Peonies are named after Paeon, a student of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine and healing. In Greek mythology Asclepias grew jealous of his student and decided he must be eradicated. Zeus managed to save Paeon from the fury of Asclepias by turning him into the peony flower.
Paeonia are herbaceous perennial plants of deciduous sub-shrubs with stunning bowl-shaped flowers and large, showy leaves. They are the perfect addition to a summer flower bed and border or used as under planting for shrubs and roses.
