Helenium

History and Origin:

Helenium is a genus within the Asteraceae family, closely resembling the sunflower and native to the Americas. They were introduced to Europe in 1729. Some varieties within this species go by the common name of ‘sneezeweed’. The common named is derived from when Helenium leaves were dried and used for making snuff which would in turn would eradicate the body of evil spirits when sniffed. The genus is named after Helen of Troy, the daughter of Greek god Zeus and Leda.

Helenium are herbaceous perennials, biennials or annuals with simplistic, yet large daisy-like flowers and a profusion of gorgeous foliage. The flowers are produced in warm and exotic colours and are best suited to flower beds, borders and are a unique addition to bouquets.
