Helenium is a genus within the Asteraceae family, closely resembling the sunflower and native to the Americas. They were introduced to Europe in 1729. Some varieties within this species go by the common name of ‘sneezeweed’. The common named is derived from when Helenium leaves were dried and used for making snuff which would in turn would eradicate the body of evil spirits when sniffed. The genus is named after Helen of Troy, the daughter of Greek god Zeus and Leda.
