Fuchsia is a genus within the Onagraceae family and was first discovered in the Dominican Republic during the late 17th century by botanist, Father Charles Plumier. He continued to name the new genus after the famous German botanist, Leonhart Fuchs (1501-1566). Approximately 110 species of Fuchsia are known today with the majority native to South America, Central America and Mexico.
Fuchsia are evergreen and deciduous shrubs or trees with distinctive, hanging, pendent-like flower heads. These flowers are truly unique with their backward-arching petals and long, inner stamen. They are perfect when planted in flower beds and borders, with some varieties climbing or trailing from hanging baskets to provide further interest.
