Paeonia lactiflora are native to China, Japan, and Korea and renowned for their huge flowers which are perfect for a vase as well as an herbaceous border or a carefully selected container. Paeonia lactiflora ‘Top Hat’ is a new variety, arriving with us in 2024, and brings dark, rich red-pink petals accented by creamy white ruffles and enhanced by rich, green and semi-glossy foliage. Referred to as ‘bomb’ type blooms because of their exploding central petals – flowers are sure to create positive impact both indoors and out. Best planted as bare roots in cooler months so roots have plenty of time to establish before the warmer weather and the emergence of top growth in April. Paeonia lactiflora ‘Top Hat’ prefers moist, well-drained soil of any kind. Position in full sun or partial shade with any aspect other than north facing. A hardy (H6), herbaceous perennial, which matures to a height of 80cm, with a spread of 60cm.
