The flowers of the ‘Detonating Paeonia lactiflora Collection’ are known as ‘bomb’ type blooms. Each has tightly packed double ruffles to the centre, surrounded by larger, looser, petals resembling an exploding flower when they appear in May and June. Blooms are not only a fantastic way to enhance your planting, they can also be cut for a vase or bouquet where those with fragrance will add their sweet perfume indoors too. A little known but valuable piece of information is - peonies are best planted as bare roots in cooler months. This gives plenty of time for roots to establish before warmer weather and the emergence of top growth in April. ‘Detonating Paeonia lactiflora Collection’ comprises three varieties which are new for 2024, two of which have alluringly sweet perfume, those being ‘She’s My Star’ and ‘Chiffon Parfait’ with their captivating mix of pink, cream, yellow and white shades. These are accompanied by the darker, ‘Top Hat’ with shades of red, pink and cream to perfectly complement each other. Paeonia lactiflora prefer moist, well-drained soil of any kind. Position in full sun or partial shade with any aspect other than north facing. Hardy, deciduous shrubs which mature to a height of 80-90cm, with a spread of 60cm.
