Clusters of tubular, bright red, double-tongued blooms, creamy white inside, almost cover the foliage all summer and will fill your garden with scent, so plant near a favourite seat or window to fully experience the perfume. Full of nectar, the blooms are a favourite of our insect friends. Dark berries follow the flowers and are much loved by birds. Native to the woodlands of Japan and China where it is known as 'winter enduring vine', the leaves and flowers are dried and used in Chinese medicine as a cure for fever, cough, thirst and other ailments.
