Tell Me More...
Like all drumstick primulas, Primula denticulata 'Rubin' has a robust approach to life and will thrive with the minimum of fuss. A rich, magenta-coloured form of the Himalayan native, it provides a welcome source of early colour and can be grown anywhere remaining reliably moist throughout the year. Stream banks, pond edges, bog gardens, and damp borders are all ideal spots. While Primula denticulata will grow well in full sun, its greatest strength lies in its ability to dazzle in dingy shade. It is best viewed in large drifts, so plant as many as you can! This species will naturally multiply itself by self-seeding, though do be aware that if there are different cultivars planted together, they are likely to hybridise, and the offspring will therefore vary in colour. Choose a spot with deep, humus-rich, moist soil, preferably on the acidic side. Providing they don't dry out; these primulas are reliably long-lived and hardy (to between -15 C and -20 C). H & S: 30cm.
