In the world of hellebores this is an exciting and unusual variety with a sculptural beauty all of its own. A fantastic way to add subtle, yet dramatic, touches to your planting. The dark, generous petals, or sepals, of Helleborus orientalis ‘Double Black’ will not only attract early pollinators – they will receive multitudes of positive comments with their alluring dark double flowers. A bright central corona of stamen creates the perfect contrast to the deepest purple blooms – all finished off by rich, glossy, palmate foliage beneath. Stems are strong and can be cut for a vase, blooms can even be snipped close to the top and floated on a bowl of water with some candles to create a beautiful table display. Helleborus orientalis ‘Double Black’ likes a spot in humus rich, moist, well-drained soil of any kind except sand based. Position in partial to full shade with any aspect other than south facing. A fully hardy, evergreen perennial which reaches a height and spread of 45cm in maturity.
