A new and unusual arrival for 2024. Helleborus orientalis ‘Double Aubergine with White Edge’ may not have a poetic sounding name but its richly hued, decadent double blooms will have you and your visitors waxing lyrical about its impact in the garden. Perfect for a vase or a shadier spot this long-lasting bloom emerges in January and is retained right through into April, with flowers held over gap-filling and robust, evergreen palmate foliage.Helleborus orientalis traces its history back to ancient times when Greek and Romans used plants medicinally. In the Middle Ages, blooms were a popular choice for religious ceremonies due its flowering around Lent (hence the common name). In the 1960s plants underwent a surge of interest with many new varieties becoming available. Breeding continues to this day with newer and more intriguing flowers being continually developed. Helleborus orientalis ‘Double Aubergine with White Edge’ prefers moist, well-drained soil of any kind except sandy. Plant in partial to full shade and this fully hardy, evergreen perennial will mature to a height and spread of around 40cm.
