Syringa is a genus of flowering plants within the Oleaceae family, native to Europe and eastern Asia. They are more commonly known as ‘Lilacs’ and are often considered to symbolize love. The genus was first formally described by Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist in 1753. The name derives from the Ancient Greek word ‘syrinx’ meaning ‘pipe’ and refers to the hollow branches of the vulgaris variety.
Syringa are deciduous shrubs or trees, with simple, attractive foliage and stunning panicles of compact and highly scented flower heads that cluster together to form a bushy and abundant feature piece.
