The Pansy is a member of the Viola genus within the Violaceae family. There are between 400 and 500 species that are dispersed around the world. The word ‘Pansy’ comes from the French word ‘pensee’ meaning ‘thought’ and was used in Late Middle English as the name for the Viola in the mid 1400’s.
Pansies are perennials or biennials with blousy, distinctive blooms and compact, bushy foliage. They are produced in an incredibly diverse range of colours, making them a versatile addition to any style, taste and planting combination. They are perfect when planted in flower beds, borders, containers or baskets within courtyard, cottage and informal garden settings.
