Hosta’s are a genus of plants within the Asparagaceae family, native to Asia. They were first documented in the western world by Ebgelbert Kaempfer (1651-1715), a doctor and botanist of the time who spent much of his time both writing about and describing this plant before any other. It took several years before Hosta’s were eventually introduced to Europe. The first Hosta’s to come to the UK was Hosta ventricosa in 1790.
Hosta are clump forming, herbaceous perennial plants that are renowned for their resilience. They are easy to grow and are available in a wide range of foliage colour, sizes and shapes. Glossy, ovate or lance-shaped foliage will brighten up dark areas with often variegated patterns. They are also popular for their flowers that often release a sweet yet subtle fragrance.
