How to apply Mulch
Mulch is often necessary to improve the overall appearance of beds and borders whilst providing additional nutrients to the soil and suppressing those pesky weeds. Here's a quick guide for how to apply mulch.
What is mulch?
Mulch is a term used to describe materials utilised as coverings atop soil in flower beds and containers. Materials are usually made up from biodegradable substances such as compost, bark, leaf mould, and manure, although in some cases are in the form of chippings, slate, fabric and gravel.
Why would I need to apply Mulch?
There are many reasons why we would or should apply mulch to the base of our plants. Mulch will retain good moisture levels during the height of summer, keeping soil cool in extreme temperatures. Mulch will also provide additional nutrients to the soil, will suppress weeds and provide a decorative finish if you so wish. Mulch should generally be applied when the soil is warm, preferably during late spring when risk of frost has passed.
How do I apply mulch?
Remove weeds and debris from your beds, border and containers. Apply a 5-7cm layer of biodegradable substance around the base of your plants taking care not to encounter stems or foliage. Not only will it benefit the overall health of the plant, but it looks great too!
