Tell Me More...
Astrantia Major Star of Billion is a relatively new cultivar developed for the cut flower market. It typifies Astrantia form with its pincushion like umbels of flowers which it produces from June - September. As a fully hardy perennial it is a delight not just for the cottage garden but will find a happy home whatever style of planting you have. Star of Billion will grow slightly taller than most Astrantia reaching a height of around 75-90cm in 2-5 years and spread to a 45cm clump. The dark green, palmate foliage is crowned by the pincushion flowers which emerge as pale green and then mature to pinky-white, fading to white at the end of the season. Although it is a delicate looking plant with taller stems there is no need to stake the blooms - it is sturdier than its looks would indicate. Plant in full sun or semi shade ensuring that the soil is moisture retentive to make the most of this bee friendly garden stalwart.
