Tell Me More...
Unsung heroes of the garden, astrantias are regarded as something of a secret weapon among professionals. Beautiful yet unshowy, these clump-forming perennials are perfect for weaving throughout a border or woodland garden, their texture, form, and muted colours mixing easily with other perennials and grasses. Though moisture-loving, with a regular mulch they will also tolerate dry conditions, meaning they can be used almost anywhere. From late spring to early summer the lush, palmate foliage is joined by an abundance of pincushion blooms, each consisting of many tiny flowers surrounded by a papery ruff. Following this initial flush, flowering continues sporadically throughout the rest of the summer, meaning a potential overall blooming period of four to five months. For this collection we have combined three of our top picks for colour and performance: ‘Star of Love’ (deep red), ‘Star of Beauty’ (dusky magenta), and ‘Star of Billion’ (greenish white).
