The only plain thing about Eryngium planum is held within the name - the physicality of this plant is, realistically, a spectacular sight to behold. It is not just the heavenly colours but also the unusual and dramatic form that will add an additional element to the garden. Thistle-like foliage which is tinged with silvery blue emerges in March and remains right through to November, bringing its fascinating form and texture to containers or herbaceous borders. Then, in June through til autumn, the dainty and decorous azure blue globes of flowers appear - acting as a draw for pollinators, as well as admiring eyes. Eryngium planum is not only perfect for the garden, it makes a magnificent addition to vases and bouquets - where its deep blue stems, foliage and blooms will really stand out against rich reds or perfect pink tones. Even better, plants are drought tolerant once established and prefer to be planted in well-drained soil which benefits from full sun. This hardy herbaceous perennial reaches a maximum height of 90cm with a spread of 60cm.
