Terrestrial orchids - Bletilla striata Shi-ran is much easier to grow than you may think.Attractive clumps of wide, green, almost pleated foliage remain attractive all year round, only becoming dormant in winter. In late spring, stems rise and up to seven orchid-like, five-petalled blooms are borne in racemes above the foliage in early summer. In shades of bright, cerise pink, the lower lip is patterned. Green seed heads follow, which mature to brown.Often known as Hyacinth Orchids and native to Japan, China and Tibet, Bletilla striata need to be planted in partial shade, maybe under deciduous trees or shrubs. Best in moist, well-drained soil which is rich in organic matter, Bletilla thrive and multiply by rhizomes, (or pseudobulbs) which grow half in and half out of the soil. Bletilla striata Shi-ran also grows well in pots which can then be brought undercover for added protection in the winter months.A hardy gem for the shady, woodland garden reaching up to 60cm tall and spreading 45cm. Once established Shi-ran is hardy to around -10 C, meaning winter protection is only required in the coldest winters in the coldest areas of the UK.
