Exotic looking, and often thought of as difficult, terrestrial orchid Bletilla Penway Paris is easy to gorw and much taller than most in the family. A hardy gem for the shady, woodland garden.Attractive clumps of wide, green, pleated foliage remain attractive all year round, only becoming dormant in winter. In late spring, stems rise, producing pale lavender flowers, the lower yellowy lip is patterned with purple markings. Bletilla are often known as Hyacinth Orchids originate from Japan, China and Tibet. The Penway series was created by the holder of the UK National Bletilla Collection, Richard Evenden. Paris was first introduced in 1994. Bletilla are best planted in partial shade, maybe under deciduous trees or shrubs. They prefer moist, well-drained soil which is rich in organic matter, where they will multiply naturally by rhizomes, (or pseudobulbs) which grow half in and half out of the soil. Bletilla Penway Paris also grows well in pots which can then be brought undercover for added protection in the winter months.Reaching up to 80-100cm tall and spreading to around 50cm once established Penway Paris is hardy to around -10 C, meaning winter protection is only required in the coldest winters in the coldest areas of the UK.
