Tell Me More...
Mystical and opulent' are words which perfectly describe our carefully curated set of purple hardy orchids - Bletilla Woodland Trio (1 Blue Dragon, Paris, Shi-ran). Growing these exotic looking beauties need not be mystifying as they are in fact, surprisingly simple to grow in our climate. Plant in moist, fertile soil which is well-drained in partial shade and Bletilla will thrive. These charming plants naturalise easily in the right area adding intrigue and beauty to your borders when they flower in early to mid-summer.The alluring blooms are borne several at a time on stems up to 1m tall in shades of pink-violet, regal purple and lavender-blue. Strap-like foliage remains attractive all year round unlike most Orchids.Bletilla were one of the first Orchid varieties to be admired and cultivated in the UK, as far back at the 18th century. These wonderful perennials can also be grown in pots, allowing you to bring them undercover for added winter protection. Outdoor grown Bletilla should be protected with mulch or fleece in colder areas to protect the pseudobulbs which sit close to the surface of the soil.
